Data Center Sustainability & Efficiency

Field-tested strategies for legally compliant and efficient data center operations

About the seminar

Legal Framework: New Requirements - New Risks

The requirements for sustainable and efficient data center operations continue to increase. With the new Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) coming into effect in 2025, data centers face binding regulations, non-compliance with which poses significant legal and economic risks. The revised F-Gas Regulation requires a fundamental reorientation of existing cooling concepts, while the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) introduces extensive new reporting obligations. Inadequate preparation for these requirements can lead to fines, increased operating costs, and reputational damage.

EN 50600: Standards Compliance as the Key to Legal Security

The EN 50600 series of standards are of crucial importance for legally compliant fulfillment of these requirements. The precise key performance indicators according to EN 50600-4-x form the basis for the legally required documentation and reports. In particular, the KPIs PUE, REF, and ERF are directly anchored in the EnEfG and must be determined precisely according to the standard. The internationally recognized maturity model according to EN 50600-5-1, in the development of which our experts were actively involved, also offers a structured methodology for the systematic evaluation and quality assurance of all sustainability and efficiency aspects. Incorrect application of these standards can lead to significant compliance risks.

Expert Knowledge for Your Legally Compliant Data Center Operation

Our five-day intensive seminar provides you with the necessary expertise to systematically master these challenges in compliance with standards. The scientifically sound and field-tested qualification imparts all the required competencies for legally secure and efficient data center operation. Our experienced speakers are actively involved in relevant standardization committees and provide you with validated methods and proven implementation strategies.

In a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge transfer and practical exercises, you will develop the necessary tools for successful implementation in your data center. The structured approach and comprehensive documentation ensure optimal knowledge transfer to your daily practice.

Data Center Sustainability & Efficiency

Learning Objectives

  • In-depth knowledge of current regulations (EnEfG, CSRD, F-Gas Regulation) and their practical implementation in data centers
  • Mastery of the relevant sustainability KPIs (PUE, REF, ERF, CER, CUE, WUE) according to EN 50600
  • Competence in the implementation of energy and environmental management systems according to ISO 50001/14001
  • Expertise in the development and implementation of sustainability strategies for data centers
  • Ability to conduct sustainability potential analyses and optimization measures

Target audience

The seminar is aimed at data center operations managers (facility management & IT), sustainability officers, data center planners and consultants, manufacturers of data center infrastructure components, certifiers for data centers, and all employees of a data center who want to deal intensively with aspects of sustainability.

The DCE academy is the exclusive sponsor of the ISO / IEC 22237 working group, which is developing the new standard. This way, you get first-hand information on the internationalization of the EN 50600 standard.

Detailed Seminar Content

Fundamentals & Regulations

A thorough understanding of current legal requirements forms the basis for legally compliant data center operations. The first part of the seminar systematically conveys all relevant regulatory fundamentals. You will gain detailed insights into the specific requirements of the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) and learn how to reliably comply with the prescribed limits and reporting obligations. The amended F-Gas Regulation is covered with a special focus on avoiding compliance risks.

Another focus is on the proper implementation of performance indicators according to EN 50600-4-x. You will learn the exact calculation and standard-compliant monitoring of these KPIs to detect deviations early and take countermeasures. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is analyzed in terms of its practical significance for your company, enabling you to optimally prepare for upcoming reporting obligations.

Legally Compliant Fundamentals Overview:

  • Systematic processing of all relevant laws and standards
  • Concrete instructions for EnEfG compliance
  • Practical implementation of the F-Gas Regulation
  • Standard-compliant implementation of EN 50600-4-x KPIs
  • Forward-looking CSRD preparation

Standards & Best Practices

The application of established standards minimizes operational risks and ensures the quality of your processes. This seminar section provides you with in-depth knowledge of the European maturity model (DCMM) according to EN 50600-5-1. You will learn how to systematically evaluate your data center using validated criteria and can identify improvement potential in a structured manner.

The European Code of Conduct is presented as an established quality assurance instrument. You will receive concrete recommendations for implementing best practices and learn how to use them for demonstrable efficiency improvements. Various certification systems are analyzed in terms of their requirements and benefits for your data center.

Quality-Assured Standards Overview:

  • Systematic application of the DCMM maturity model
  • Validated best practices of the Code of Conduct
  • Field-tested implementation strategies
  • Requirements-based certification preparation

Technical Implementation

The technically correct implementation of sustainability measures is crucial for their effectiveness and economic efficiency. In this part of the seminar, you will develop well-founded strategies for the error-free implementation of technical solutions. You will learn about scientifically validated concepts for sustainable IT architectures and understand their significance for the operational security of your data center.

In the area of building automation, you will gain detailed insights into the systematic monitoring and control of your infrastructure. You will learn the precise implementation of comprehensive energy monitoring that enables early detection of inefficiencies. The concept of digital twins is explained using concrete use cases, allowing you to identify risks and optimization potential already in the planning phase.

Special attention is paid to the energetic optimization of air conditioning. You will learn about various concepts for waste heat utilization and receive fact-based decision criteria for their economic efficiency. The most important technical parameters for efficiency improvement are systematically developed, enabling you to plan and implement optimization measures in a targeted manner.

Technically Validated Solutions Overview:

  • Scientifically founded IT architecture concepts
  • Systematic energy monitoring and management
  • Error-minimized implementation of digital twins
